My Two (Favorite) Dads

I’m not talking about the quirky late-eighties show with a pre-Mad About You Paul Reiser. (Does anyone remember why both guys thought they were her dad?  And also, with no USA Network in the nineties, what would we have done on sick days?) I’m talking about the two favorite dads in my life.  The one I was lucky enough to be raised by (with an equally awesome mom), and the one that I am now lucky enough to raise my boys with.

When the twins were first born, in those blurry, postpartum days, I remember crying as I had the overwhelming realization of how much babies need their mother. I cried not just for the intense need that my babies had for me, but from the horrifying fact that there were babies without mothers to meet those needs.

As I’ve watched Calvin and Abel grow, I have also been overwhelmed with the fact of how much the need their father. There is a reason that when they are happiest, they yell “Dad, Dad, Dad!!!”  He is their comedian, their comforter, their very best playmate, and so importantly, their example.sleeping boys

I shouldn’t be surprised that I chose the best dad to marry, since I was raised by one. From making my dream of horse ownership a reality, to distracting me from teenage heartbreak with driving lessons, to comforting me after the failed driving test (not a result of his good teaching), I am so lucky to have the dad I do.  Today, to watch him with his first two grandchildren (he taught me to be an overachiever), is such a wonderful gift.

To my two favorite dads, Happy Father’s Day. I love you.
